Perfume & Wine Pairing - Habit Rouge with Château du Moulin Rouge

Perfume and wine - perfect match!

I am starting a new process on my BL'eauOG - pairing of perfumes with wines. I am completely overwhelmed by organoleptics - combination of smell and taste. It all started when I realized that I have a sensation in mouth when tasting a good, opulent, red wine. It was always all accompanied by a good perfume on my skin and that is how the idea was born. When drinking Château du Moulin Rouge, I see Guerlain Habit Rouge and Moresque Contessa as the company.
I met Bojan Kobal, an enologist from Slovenia who is producing white wines and I asked him if it would be possible to link the perfume with a wine and he said probably. We will see what will happen when we meet, but in the meantime, I associated red wine with a good perfume.

When I was a TV correspondent for Croatia in France, I discovered the domain Château du Moulin Rouge in Bordeaux region. The protected origin or appellation is from the Haut-Médoc which is specific for its wineyards and situated between famous Margaux and Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. Château du Moulin Rouge is becoming glorious wine which is recognized as the Cru Bourgeois wineyard, very specific for the Médoc region. Château du Moulin Rouge is winning medals regularly at the competitions all around Europe. 2009 bottle won a golden medal in Bruxelles in 2011 and it regularly appears in all wine guides as the top rated wine.

The domain of Château du Moulin Rouge is a family property on 18 acres influenced by the estuary of Gironde river. Their vineyard is around 40 years old and composed 50% of Merlot that gives warmth and roundness, 40% of Cabernet Sauvignon that gives structure for aging and 10% of Cabernet Franc that gives spicy notes and fine aromas. Grape is collected manually of which the best ones are collected into oak barrels of French Oak with big grains.

2010 is a tasteful red wine. It has good acidity and body. It has extremely good cherry with spices and grilled stuff inside. At the same time is powerful and rounded. A perfect balance between the wood and fruits. Drinking that wine, I can imagine, easily, Italian perfume called Contessa which a symbol of Tuscany and sunlight. Perfect vanilla scent with woody dry down that goes perfectly with this bottle! Contessa is elegant, opulent, seductive, just as this wine!

2009 is even more classy. I can imagine it with perfect suit, white shirt, cuff links and legendary Guerlain Habit Rouge perfume. It is powerful, raw, fruity and woody wine. It is heavenly amazing wine that can be called as Millessime! This wine won a golden medal in Bruxelles in 2011. It is smooth, well balanced, fruity, woody... all that you can imagine from the wine, it is there. 2009 is eternal creation, like Habit Rouge that was created in 1965 and it still rocks because it has eternal smell of leather, vanilla, iris and powdery scent. Two myths in one place - Château du Moulin Rouge and Guerlain Habit Rouge!

  1. I haven't tried either perfumes, or wine featured in this post but curiously it's wine that got me interested the most (and I don't even like French wines! ;) ). Not that I'm telling you that you need to work on your perfume-describing skills, but you did it really well for wine ;)

    2. I checked online: it's not too expensive. I need to see if one of my two favorite wine stores carries it.
